United Church Funds (UCF), a not-for-profit corporation and associated ministry of the United Church of Christ (UCC), provides socially responsible, values-aligned investment management services to churches, ministries and other faith-based organizations. UCF offers customized investment portfolios and prudent investment strategies that provide competitive returns while also reflecting its clients’ values in seeking to achieve a just world. UCF also offers endowment governance consulting and planned giving services.

Position Summary

The Director of Social Responsibility (SR) oversees UCF’s commitment to sustainable and responsible investing across a diversified family of 13 investment funds totaling approximately $800 million in assets under management. Oversight includes contributing to the development of SR policies and investment guidelines, monitoring UCF’s and its managers’ progress toward SR goals, collaborating in SR engagements with partner organizations, communicating SR objectives and achievements to clients and major stakeholders, and resourcing the UCC in issues related to SR.

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Staff the Social Responsibility Committee of the Board of Directors
  2. Assist in determining and monitoring SR investing policies, working with the UCF Investment Committee and the Investment and Endowment Committee of the UCC Board
  3. Utilize research platforms for managers’ adherence to UCF’s social screening policies
  4. Analyze opportunities for new offerings, including meeting with industry professionals committed to impact investing; advocate for new offerings as appropriate; and seek educational tools as necessary regarding new offerings
  5. Oversee proxy voting system and interactions between custodians and system
  6. Represent UCF and engage personally with external SR partners, including Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility and Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI)
  7. Represent UCF and partners in shareholder engagements and in meetings and communications with corporate managements and boards
  8. Coordinate with UCF communications staff on regular publicity of UCF SR activity, including, but not limited to, press releases, website posts, blogs and social media
  9. Prepare regular reports, including UCF annual report, UCF impact and sustainability reports, and PRI assessments
  10. Act as a spokesperson for the SR activities and objectives of UCF to general public and to UCC constituencies
  11. Participate in and resource UCC policy settings, including General Synod, United Church of Christ Board, Investment and Endowment Committee, and conference annual meetings
  12. Perform the functions of a member of UCF staff and management team member


  1. Bachelor’s degree, with preference given to Masters or professional certification
  2. Ability to understand and work with finance and investments, corporate and governance structures, and policy-making organizations (governmental and non-profit/NGO)
  3. Strong critical thinking and analytical skills accompanied by excellent oral and writing skills
  4. Familiarity with or ability to understand and work with the structure and polity of the United Church of Christ and the role of United Church Funds within the denomination
  5. Highly self-motivated and able to function in a work-from-home setting with regular use of communication technology, face-to-face meetings, and travel as necessary
  6. Organized self-starter with an enthusiasm about providing excellent service to clients, partners and key stakeholders
  7. Interest in working for a developing organization and to work collegially in a diverse setting
  8. Commitment to professional development and personal growth
