United Church Funds Announces the Passing of Rev. Dr. Harold C. Smith
United Church Funds (UCF) is deeply saddened by the passing of Rev. Dr. Harold C. Smith, member emeritus, who died in New York on March 21, at the age of 83 after a brief stay in the hospital.
Donald G. Hart, President, UCF said, “As we mourn the death of Harold, we also celebrate his accomplishments and praise his business acumen and service to missions he deeply cared about. We were fortunate to have a board member of his caliber. We will miss his wisdom.”
Rev. Dr. Smith was born in the Bronx and attended Bronx High School of Science. He was a graduate of Ursinus College, received his Master of Business Administration from New York University and was ordained after studying at Union Theological Seminary. He was a Chartered Financial Analyst and a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts.
For 40 years, Rev. Dr. Smith pursued dual careers in ministry and investment management. As an ordained pastor in the United Church of Christ (UCC), he served first in Bridgeport and later at Unity Hill UCC in Trumbull, Connecticut. In 1958, Rev. Dr. Smith embarked on his business career at the YMCA Retirement Fund. He rose from a junior in the investment department to become President, CEO and Chief Investment Officer in 1983. Under his leadership, the Fund experienced unprecedented growth in membership, benefits paid to YMCA employees and assets which grew from $400 million to $3.75 billion. He was later enshrined in the YMCA Hall of Fame at Springfield College.
Rev. Dr. Smith is survived by a niece, Barbara Swain, three nephews, Art Swain, John Swain, and Donald Gehlbach, and a grandniece, Jennifer Grzelak.
